The corporate strategy of PALM has always been founded on the principle of sustainability. Environmental awareness, social responsibility, and good corporate governance (ESG) are the driving forces behind our actions and are integrated into all our decisions. This approach is guided by the PALM Sustainability Strategy.
As a globally operating company, PALM is deeply aware of its societal responsibilities and is committed to ecologically and socially responsible corporate governance. We embrace the values and principles of the UN Global Compact, support the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations, and uphold the International Labour Organization's (ILO) Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. As a family-owned business, PALM’s clear strategy is to shape the future in close, trustworthy collaboration with customers, employees, suppliers, service providers, and other business partners.
Our entire corporate management is committed to environmentally responsible operations, with a strong emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly paper production. The recycled raw materials used by Palm contribute to the conservation of natural resources.
We produce our corrugated base paper and newsprint exclusively from 100% selected recycled paper.
CO₂ reduction (SDG 13)
We aim to reduce the emissions of our production and improve our carbon footprint.
To achieve this, we continuously work on making our processes more efficient and less emission-intensive. At the same time,
PALM is investing in new environmentally friendly technologies and paving the way for a climate-neutral future powered by green hydrogen.
The PALM Cycle
At Palm Group, we operate a closed-cycle system. Our raw material, 100% recycled paper, is sourced by Palm Recycling and processed at five locations across Europe. Our paper mills produce high-quality newsprint and corrugated base paper. Palm Packaging, with its 29 corrugated plants, manufactures sustainable and innovative corrugated packaging solutions that are 100% recyclable.
This allows Palm to offer its customers environmentally friendly paper and sustainable, recyclable, and therefore reusable packaging. After use, these can be reintroduced into the Palm recycling process.
We are currently modernising the power plants at all three of our paper mills in Germany. This is an investment program of over €200 million.
As a result, all five of our paper mill locations will have a state-of-the-art, highly efficient, and flexible fleet of power plants with energy utilisation rates exceeding 90%. By utilising the latest generation of gas turbines, we set high standards. These turbines can be operated not only with natural gas but also with up to 50% hydrogen.
At the new PM 5 paper machine in Aalen, lightweight basis weights for corrugated board papers are being produced. Through the continuous development of our products, high grammage reductions down to 60 g/m² has been possible since 2022. A material reduction of at least 15% with comparable performance is achievable.
Our innovative corrugated board packaging solutions are custom, sustainable, and versatile. According to an analysis by the Society for Packaging Market Research (GVM), 20% of all plastic packaging in Germany, Austria and Switzerland could be replaced by packaging made of corrugated board. Even 65% of the plastic content in frozen food packaging can be substituted with paper-based materials such as corrugated board. Our robust packaging solutions perfectly protect food, electronics and machine parts. All of our packaging products can be recycled after use.
Our papers are made from 100% recycled raw materials and our products are 100% recyclable.
Social engagement
Since the company’s founding days, members of the Palm family have been actively engaged in supporting local history and cultural initiatives. This commitment to the common good has been carried forward through the Dr. Wilfried Palm Foundation, established in 2002 by its namesake and continued by his descendants.
